Common mistake

IaC blind spot. DVA holders who've only used the console or CloudFormation arrive in interviews unable to discuss Terraform state management or module patterns, which is the practical expectation in most UK mid-market AWS shops regardless of the cert held.

Recruiter signal, not marketing

What it actually does

Validates serverless architecture knowledge, SDK usage patterns and CI/CD tooling familiarity at a level SAA doesn't reach. Pairs well with SAA for developers taking on cloud ownership. Does NOT signal platform or operations depth, and won't compensate for absent Terraform experience in most UK infrastructure roles.

Developer Associate fits one shape of engineer well. Backend folk whose AWS time is spent in Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway, and CodePipeline rather than VPC and EC2. The exam is fair, the syllabus matches what serverless and event-driven work actually looks like, and it pairs well with a public repo of one production-shaped serverless application. Take it if you're a developer moving toward AWS-native work or already living in Lambda. Skip it if you're an infrastructure-leaning engineer. SAA covers most of the ground you care about and lands better on infrastructure CVs.
