Strong

Market-level call. Not personal advice.

The cloud cert that does the most work in UK enterprise. Skipped too often by AWS-fixated juniors who underestimate how Azure-heavy the UK market actually is.

Confidence
High
Signal
High
Why this confidence
UK enterprise, public sector and NHS cloud hiring is meaningfully Azure-first. AZ-104 is the cert recruiters in those markets actually search for.
Why this signal strength
Default ATS filter on Azure cloud admin and platform roles in UK enterprise, gov and regulated sectors. Higher hit rate than AWS SAA on UK-specific roles.
Who this pays off for
  • Sysadmins moving into Azure platform or modern infrastructure teams
  • Internal movers in M365 or hybrid Windows shops formalising existing Azure work
  • Mid-career engineers targeting UK gov, NHS or financial services cloud roles
Who walks away with nothing
  • Helpdesk staff with no PowerShell or AD background. The Azure-without-AD trap shows up at interview within fifteen minutes.
  • AWS-track candidates with no Azure exposure. The certs are not interchangeable signals to recruiters.
  • Anyone targeting cloud architecture. AZ-305 or solution architect equivalents are the signal at that level.
The named failure mode

Taking AZ-104 before AZ-900 and basic PowerShell are real. Pass rates are reasonable, but interviewers ask Entra ID, RBAC and Bicep questions a syllabus pass cannot fake. The AZ-104-before-PowerShell pattern is the most common Azure interview failure in UK enterprise.

Recruiter signal, not marketing

Mid-level Azure platform interviews in UK enterprise, gov, NHS and financial services. Internal mobility from Windows admin into hybrid cloud roles. It does not unlock senior architect roles without AZ-305 and project evidence.

Falsifiability
  • Microsoft restructures the AZ-104 exam and pushes core admin work into a different credential
  • UK enterprise cloud hiring tilts decisively toward AWS or GCP and Azure recruiter inbound drops
  • Terraform on Azure becomes the dominant ATS tick-box and AZ-104 demotes to nice-to-have

This tells you whether the cert is worth pursuing. It does not tell you whether it is worth pursuing for you.

This cert in isolation tells you very little. Here is where it actually sits. The pathways that use it, and the roles it realistically supports.

  • Azure cloud-engineer / sysadmin roles
  • Enterprise mobility from on-prem
Practitioner take

AZ-104 is the cert to take if your current or target employer runs on Microsoft, and that's most of UK enterprise, public sector, and a large chunk of mid-market everywhere. It's a more practical exam than the AWS SAA equivalent, and the Microsoft ecosystem rewards people who can actually administer Azure rather than just talk about it. The catch: AZ-104 is much less portable across employers than AWS certs are. Take it when you have a specific Azure-shaped target. If you don't, AWS SAA is the safer first cloud cert because more employers recognise it on a CV.

Authored opinion. Updated against current hiring conditions, not vendor marketing.

Recommended prior knowledge

  • AZ-900 or equivalent vocabulary

Common misconceptions

  • Azure Administrator (AZ-104) alone clears HR filters; it doesn't replace shipped, documented work.

What this cert does NOT guarantee

  • Architecture roles alone
