Microsoft's senior Azure architect cert. Genuine market signal when paired with delivery evidence. Almost useless without it.
- UK Azure-heavy enterprises and Microsoft partners recognise AZ-305 as the architect-track credential, but recruiter behaviour varies more than for AZ-104. The cert opens doors that delivery history closes properly.
- Cloud architect JDs in Microsoft-aligned shops list it as preferred. AWS-leaning enterprises and product companies care less, and Terraform fluency increasingly outweighs the badge.
Best for
- AZ-104 holders with two plus years of real Azure delivery moving into a first architect seat
- Hybrid infrastructure architects formalising existing Azure design work
- Consultancy and Microsoft-partner engineers pursuing partner-competency requirements
Usually a mistake for
- Mid-level admins with no architecture reps. The exam rewards design vocabulary the day job has not produced.
- AWS architects rebadging without Azure delivery. Recruiters spot the unbacked cross-cloud pivot at interview.
- Career changers using it as a shortcut into cloud architecture. The architect-without-deliveries pattern is the fastest interview disqualifier in Microsoft-stack hiring.
Common mistake
Taking AZ-305 immediately after AZ-104 with no production design exposure. Pass rates are reasonable, but architect interviews ask Landing Zone, Bicep and Entra ID design tradeoffs that a syllabus cannot fake. The AZ-104-straight-to-AZ-305 leap is the most common reason Microsoft-stack architect candidates fail the second-round interview.
What it actually does
Shortlist position on Azure-first architect roles in UK enterprise, public sector and Microsoft partners. It does not unlock multi-cloud architect roles without separate AWS or GCP evidence, and it does not substitute for a portfolio of shipped Landing Zones at senior level.
What would change this call
- Microsoft restructures the AZ-305 exam to require validated architecture deliverables
- UK enterprise architecture hiring shifts decisively toward platform-engineering credentials over vendor architect certs
- Terraform Associate plus a credible Landing Zone portfolio becomes the default UK Azure architect signal and AZ-305 demotes to nice-to-have
This tells you whether the cert is worth pursuing. It does not tell you whether it is worth pursuing for you.
