Cisco CCNA remains the default shortlist filter at MSPs, ISPs and most enterprise network teams. The 2020 blueprint refresh kept the cert technically credible.
Why this signal strength
Network engineer JDs still name it explicitly. Job ads that don't require it usually still prefer it. Skipping it costs interviews on Cisco-leaning rotations.

Usually a mistake for

  • Career changers with no homelab or packet-tracer time. Pass rates are good, interview survival is not.
  • Cloud-first engineers. AWS Advanced Networking or AZ-700 do more in cloud-heavy shops.
  • Senior network engineers using it to refresh. CCNP Enterprise is the appropriate signal at that level.
The named failure mode

Common mistake

Treating CCNA as the interview itself. The recruiter passes the CV, the hiring manager asks what happens when an OSPF adjacency stays in EXSTART. Candidates who passed the exam without lab time freeze on that question. The exam-without-lab failure mode is the single most common rejection on Cisco-leaning shortlists.

Recruiter signal, not marketing

What it actually does

Shortlist position on most UK network engineer roles inside MSPs, ISPs and Cisco-aligned enterprises. It does not unlock senior network or architecture interviews without CCNP, and it does not bridge into cloud networking without separate cloud evidence.

Practitioner take

CCNA is one of the few certs where the exam material maps almost directly onto the day-job. If you're going into networking or any role that touches a switch, study for it properly and the knowledge sticks. The honest catch: networking as a pure career is narrower than it was a decade ago. CCNA is excellent if you're heading toward network engineering, cloud networking, or the Cisco-flavoured corners of security. It's lukewarm if you're hoping it generally 'helps you stand out'. It doesn't, and the time is better spent on AZ-104 or AWS SAA if cloud is where you're actually pointed.
