- CNCF exams are proctored hands-on labs with no multiple choice. There's no passive-study route. That filters out paper certs entirely. UK DevOps and platform-engineering job specs name Kubernetes explicitly and with increasing frequency across all three cloud platforms.
- Candidates must demonstrate workload configuration, multi-container pod patterns, resource limits, probes, network policies and Helm in a live cluster under time pressure. The format directly mirrors day-to-day platform-engineering work. Hiring panels who know Kubernetes trust the signal.

- A cloud-platform cert, when it's cloud-agnostic and validates workload skills that run identically on any managed Kubernetes service
Common mistake
CKAD-only positioning. Engineer holds CKAD but lacks CKA cluster-admin knowledge, arrives in platform-engineering interviews unable to discuss node pools, RBAC at the cluster level or etcd backup patterns, which are standard panel questions for senior roles.
What it actually does
Proves kubectl fluency, workload-resource configuration and application-lifecycle management at a standard that's directly observable in the exam format. Pairs with CKA to cover the full platform-engineering signal. Does NOT validate cluster provisioning, Terraform-based infrastructure management or cloud-provider-specific managed Kubernetes configuration.
What would change this call
- CNCF updates the CKAD curriculum to absorb significant Helm or service-mesh configuration content, expanding its scope
- A competing hands-on Kubernetes credential from a major cloud vendor gains enough UK market recognition to split the hiring signal
- Kubernetes adoption plateaus in favour of managed container platforms that abstract the workload layer, reducing the cert's relevance in generalist DevOps hiring
