Hiring signal is real but narrow. UK network automation roles are growing but still clustered in scale operators and forward-leaning enterprise. The majority of MSP and mid-market network jobs do not list it.

  • A hiring differentiator in traditional enterprise network teams. Ops-mode network shops read it as a distraction from routing and switching depth

Common mistake

Automation-washing. Engineers pass DevNet Associate without building anything outside the exam sandbox. No Git repo, no working playbooks, no lab automation evidence. Interviewers asking for a working Ansible inventory against a GNS3 topology expose it immediately.

DevNet Associate is Cisco's answer to network engineers who want to prove they can automate rather than just operate. Python for network automation, Ansible, REST APIs, Cisco platform SDKs. The syllabus is genuinely useful and the cert tells a hiring manager you're not the engineer who insists on configuring everything by hand. The honest market read: outside Cisco-aligned automation roles, DevNet Associate is a soft signal. Take it if you're already in a Cisco shop moving toward network automation, or pairing it with CCNP Enterprise for a senior network seat. Skip it as a standalone cloud or DevOps cert.
