Reality check

SANS' foundational security cert. Bundled with a SANS course it runs ~£4,200 all-in, voucher-only is closer to £750 but almost no UK employer accepts that route as credible. Pursue if: Your employer pays for SANS training (the only realistic route). Avoid if: You're self-funded. At £4k+ with SANS course, Security+ + a home lab is the better ROI by an order of magnitude.

Recommended prior knowledge

  • Security+ knowledge or equivalent

Common misconceptions

  • It helps with government / contractor roles. It does not unlock roles where security+ already passes the hr filter.
  • GIAC GSEC alone clears HR filters; it doesn't replace shipped, documented work.

What this cert does NOT guarantee

  • Roles where Security+ already passes the HR filter

Practical skills that matter

  • Government / contractor roles
  • SANS-trained team credibility
