Fortinet moved NSE 4 to the FCP naming in 2023, then reverted on 15 July 2026. Active FCP holders were reissued as NSE 4. The current exam is the NSE 4 FortiOS administrator paper.

Fortinet holds a dominant share of UK SMB and mid-market firewall deployments, particularly via MSPs. NSE 4 is the operational baseline credential in that ecosystem and appears on MSP engineer JDs at a frequency that rivals Cisco credentials in that segment.

High signal in the MSP channel and SMB enterprise segment. Fortinet's UK large enterprise and financial sector penetration is lower, so NSE 4 signal drops sharply above a certain org size, where Palo Alto or Check Point predominate.

  • Broad network security credibility. NSE 4 is FortiOS platform-specific. The SD-WAN, VPN and NGFW policy concepts don't map to other vendors' constructs
  • Equivalent signal to PCNSE or CCNP Security in large enterprise hiring. At that level NSE 4 reads as MSP-grade rather than enterprise-grade
  • A substitute for routing and switching depth. MSP generalists who hold NSE 4 but can't read a BGP table or troubleshoot OSPF adjacency failures get exposed fast when customers escalate
The named failure mode

Common mistake

NSE 4 without FortiManager or FortiAnalyzer exposure. Single-box lab practice gets engineers through the exam but MSP roles managing 40-plus customer tenants run centralised management. Candidates who've only ever touched standalone FortiGate GUIs stall immediately on multi-VDOM and FortiManager ADOM architecture.

Strong hiring priority at UK MSPs, regional resellers and SMB enterprise in the Fortinet partner channel. Does NOT unlock roles at large enterprise, finance or public sector where Check Point, Palo Alto or Cisco dominate the perimeter.

NSE 4 is Fortinet's mid-level cert and it's relevant in a narrower lane than people expect. UK Fortinet deployment is heaviest in mid-market enterprise, MSPs, and SMB-leaning shops, and the cert lands directly with hiring managers in those segments. Take it if you're operating FortiGates day-to-day or moving into an MSP role that's named it. The exam is fair and the syllabus is operationally useful. Skip it as a generalist network security badge. Palo Alto and Cisco dominate the senior enterprise space, and vendor-specific certs age out fast when you change shops.
