VCP-VCF Administrator (VMware)

VMware professional cert, narrowing market, still meaningful in regulated enterprise.

Under Broadcom the VCP track is organised around VMware Cloud Foundation. The administrator route is 2V0-17.25, and prior VCP credentials do not carry across to the VCF certifications.

Overrated

Market-level call. Not personal advice.

Once a reliable enterprise signal. The Broadcom acquisition broke the VMware customer relationship, and the cert's shelf life is now tied to a migration timeline, not a skills timeline.

Confidence
High
Signal
Low
Why this confidence
The Broadcom-VMware licensing revolt is well documented and active. UK enterprises from financial services to local government are publicly evaluating Proxmox, Nutanix and Azure VMware Solution as exits. Hiring intent for VMware-specific skills is visibly contracting in new infrastructure roles.
Why this signal strength
VCP still signals virtualisation fundamentals competence. But the underlying platform's commercial instability means a hiring manager can't be confident that the skill set maps to what they'll be running in 24 months. Platform uncertainty degrades cert signal directly.
Who this pays off for
  • Infrastructure engineers already deep in VMware estates who need the cert for internal promotion or vendor partner compliance requirements
  • Consultants engaged specifically on VMware-to-alternative migration projects where platform knowledge is the asset being sold
  • Candidates in sectors with long refresh cycles, NHS and defence, where VMware isn't going anywhere soon regardless of licensing politics
Who walks away with nothing
  • A durable virtualisation credential that transfers across hypervisors. VCP is vSphere-specific, and Proxmox or Hyper-V hiring conversations start from scratch
  • A signal of modern infrastructure thinking in cloud-native or platform engineering roles, where it reads as legacy orientation
  • A stable investment in a vendor cert. Broadcom's renewal fee restructuring and partner programme changes have made the maintenance cost unpredictable
The named failure mode

Sunk-cost continuation. Candidates already holding VCP renew and extend into VCAP tracks because the prior investment feels wasted otherwise, while the market underneath them migrates. Renewal costs compound against a shrinking return.

Recruiter signal, not marketing

Keeps you credentialled for active VMware estate roles and satisfies partner tier requirements for VMware resellers or MSPs still trading on vSphere. Does not buy relevance in greenfield infrastructure work, cloud-native shops or any organisation actively migrating off VMware.

Falsifiability
  • Broadcom reverses or substantially moderates its VMware licensing and partner programme changes, partially restoring enterprise confidence and cert demand
  • A major UK public sector framework mandates VMware-certified staff, creating compliance-driven demand regardless of commercial sentiment
  • Proxmox, Nutanix or another hypervisor alternative achieves dominant enterprise adoption faster than expected, accelerating VCP's obsolescence curve sharply

This tells you whether the cert is worth pursuing. It does not tell you whether it is worth pursuing for you.

This cert in isolation tells you very little. Here is where it actually sits. The pathways that use it, and the roles it realistically supports.

  • Virtualisation / infra-engineer roles
  • Enterprise datacenter work
Practitioner take

VCP is a legacy cert in a legacy market segment, and that's not the same as worthless. UK banks, hospitals, councils, and most established enterprises still run vSphere and need people who can operate it. If you're in or targeting one of those shops, VCP is a credible signal. Broadcom's takeover and the licensing chaos that followed mean fewer people are entering the cert, which counterintuitively makes those who hold it more valuable to the shops that can't migrate off VMware. Take it if you're already a sysadmin in a vSphere environment. Don't take it if you're trying to enter modern cloud or platform work.

Authored opinion. Updated against current hiring conditions, not vendor marketing.

Recommended prior knowledge

  • Datacenter or sysadmin background

Common misconceptions

  • VCP-VCF Administrator (VMware) alone clears HR filters; it doesn't replace shipped, documented work.

What this cert does NOT guarantee

  • Cloud-native or modern platform roles
