Is a computer science degree worth it in the UK?

For a specific route, yes, and it's still one of the best bets going. For most people asking the question, no. Here's the tradeoff nobody selling either route wants to put this cleanly.

For a specific kind of career, yes, and it's still one of the best bets in the country. For the person typing this into Google at half nine on a Sunday because they're deciding between a CS degree and a cyber apprenticeship, probably no. The degree isn't a general-purpose ticket into "IT". It's a specific instrument for a specific route, and buying it for the wrong route is an expensive way to end up on helpdesk anyway.

What a UK CS degree actually buys you

Three things, roughly in order of value. A structured grounding in the parts of computing you'd otherwise skip on your own (data structures, algorithms, systems, a bit of theory). A CV signal that gets you shortlisted for the graduate schemes at the firms that recruit almost exclusively from them. And three or four years of being surrounded by people trying to do the same thing you're trying to do, which is worth more than the syllabus most weeks.

Notice what isn't on that list. It doesn't buy you employability in infrastructure, networking, cloud ops, cyber operations or GRC. It doesn't teach you to admin a Windows domain, stand up a firewall, write a runbook, or read a SIEM alert. The degree is optimised for software engineering and the roles adjacent to it. Everything else it does is a side effect.

Who this is genuinely for

  • You want to write code for a living, at scale, at a firm that asks about big-O in interviews. That's the graduate-scheme lane and the degree is the shortest route into it.
  • You're eighteen, undecided between engineering-adjacent disciplines, and you want the widest optionality across software, data, ML, quant and adjacent research. A decent CS degree from a Russell Group department keeps every one of those doors open in a way a two-year cert stack does not.
  • You genuinely enjoy the maths. Not the "I got a good grade in maths" kind. The kind where discrete structures and linear algebra don't ruin your week. If that's you, the degree pays back the tuition on the analytical bench-strength alone.

Who it isn't for, even though it's marketed that way

Career-changers in their late twenties or thirties looking at a CS degree as the way into cyber, cloud or IT ops. Three years and £27,750 in tuition, plus living costs, to arrive at a graduate job market that mostly wants software developers is a slow and expensive way to reach a starting line you could reach in six to eighteen months with a support role and the right two certs.

I saw this on a support desk years ago. A customer had a masters in computer science, knew theory I still don't, and yet struggled with the practical day-to-day work the job actually required. The degree gave him depth; the role needed a different shape of fluency. That gap is not a failure of the degree; it is a mismatch between the degree and the job.

School leavers pointed at CS by parents or teachers who last looked at the job market in 2010. The "computer science equals good tech job" heuristic was accurate then. It's now accurate for a narrower slice. The slice is still worth aiming at if you're the right shape; it's an expensive mistake if you aren't.

Anyone whose actual interest is cyber security. Undergraduate cyber degrees exist, and cyber apprenticeships exist, and neither of them is a CS degree with a security module bolted on. The graduates I see coming out of "BSc Computer Science with Cybersecurity" programmes usually end up either doing a proper MSc, chasing the same certs as everyone else, or taking an L4 analyst apprenticeship after graduation. That's a lot of debt to end up at the same starting point. A security architect I work with, who used to hire people into his team, didn't treat a degree as one of the main signals. That's not an anti-degree stance; it's a reflection of what those roles actually reward.

The alternative the degree hides

In the UK specifically, the apprenticeship route is genuinely good. Not "good for people who can't get into university" good. Actually good. Level 4 and Level 6 apprenticeships in software, cyber and data at companies like BAE, BT, PwC, IBM and most of the banks pay you around £22,000 to £30,000 while training, come with recognised qualifications on the way out, and land you in a job with three to four years of real experience by the time your university friends are graduating with debt. On paper it's not even close.

Where the degree still wins is when the job you want is the one the apprenticeship pipeline doesn't lead to. Research-adjacent roles, quant, ML engineering at frontier labs, certain graduate schemes at investment banks and consultancies. If that's the target, the apprenticeship route quietly closes those doors, and the degree is the way in.

This is the honest tradeoff. Nobody selling either route wants to put it this cleanly, because universities need bums on seats and apprenticeship providers need placements. POST doesn't have that problem.

What the degree does not fix

A CS degree does not fix the second-beginner problem. Graduating with a 2:1 and no internships puts you in the same pool as thousands of other 2:1 graduates with no internships, and hiring managers behave accordingly. The people who convert their CS degree into the roles it was supposed to unlock are almost always the ones who did one or two industrial placements, contributed to something real on the side, or came out with a first from a department the target employers actively recruit from. It also doesn't fix expectation compression. The gap between "graduate developer at a firm that recruits from your uni" and "graduate developer applying cold to everything on LinkedIn" is enormous, and the degree by itself doesn't tell you which side of it you're on. Anyone spending £50,000 plus opportunity cost on the wrong side of that line is making a decision they'll want to have made differently.

The specific case for and against right now

For. AI has raised the floor on what a "junior developer" needs to be worth hiring. Firms are more willing to hire someone with a strong theoretical grounding and slightly less production experience than the other way around, because the production experience is the easier gap to close on the job. A good CS graduate is arguably better positioned in 2026 than in 2022 for this reason.

Against. The graduate developer market itself has thinned. Milkround-style recruitment at the top end still exists, but the long tail of "we'll hire five juniors this year and train them up" has quietly evaporated at a lot of mid-sized UK firms. The degree is more valuable per graduate and less valuable in aggregate. That is not a contradiction. It just means the middle of the distribution is having a harder time than the top and the bottom.

The five-second version

If you want to write software professionally, the degree is probably the right call, and going to a department that the firms you want to work at actually recruit from matters more than the classification. If you want to work in IT, cyber, cloud ops or infrastructure, the apprenticeship or a support-role-plus-certs route will get you there faster, cheaper, and often with better starting pay. If you're not sure which of those you want, the degree preserves the widest set of options, and that optionality is worth paying for provided you know that's what you're buying.
